2012 WILL BE TOUGH- UN

Those expecting the new year 2012 to be rosy will be disappointed by the report just released by the United Nations. According to the report, UN warned that failure by policy makers and the imposition of Austerity programmes across Europe due to the sovereign debt crisis may lead to another global showdown. The report also revealed that because of strict budget measures, growth in the European union would only hit 0.7 per cent compared to 1.6 percent registered in 2011 "Austerity is not an effective way to counter the debt crisis" said Robert shelburne, a senior Economic Adviser to the UN Economic Commission for Europe,especially when interests rates are low. The Agency France Presse (AFP) quoted shelburne as saying that Austerty was costing the world economy a trillion dollars in lost out put. Meanwhile, the world Bank report has also projected a drastic decline in growth in the year 2012.

COMMISSIONER OF POLICE SUSPENDED

The Inspector General of Police ,Hafix Ringim has suspended a commissioner of Police (CP) over the escape of a suspected Boko Haram member. A statement by the Force public Relations Officer (FPRO) Olusola Amore, in Abujah said that the suspected Boko Haram member was arrested and handed over to the CP for further interrogation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) ,but the senior officer later handed the suspect whose identity was not disclosed by the police to some junior officers for purported further interrogation. According to the statement,it was while they were going for interrogation in Abaji, a sattelite town in Abujah that the police team was allegedly attacked by suspected gang members and the suspect escaped.

FEDERAL,STATES AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS SHARE N559.101 BILLION

The federal, states and local governments shared  N559.101 billion from the federation account for December 2011,The minister of state for finance, Dr.Yerima Ngama has revealed. Dr.Ngama stated this while briefing newsmen on Monday after the meeting of the federation accounts allocation committee (FAAC) in Abuja. He stated that the federal government approved the said amount to the three tiers of government. The minister however disclosed that due to late arrival of the figures, FAAC was not able to compute  the figures to the tiers.‘but by tuesday morning, the breakdown of the figures would be distributed and made known to the public, he said.
Ngama said the strike called by the organized labour had affected the speed with which some of the information needed was to be gathered for FAAC.
“This is as regards especially the information on internally generated revenue  and value added tax(VAT),”he said
The minister pointed out that it was while the committee was still meeting that it received the confirmation of the total VAT for December.
“The figure of  N57.1 billion for this was received from the office of the  Accountant  General of the federation as we were meeting,he said.
Ngama assured Nigerians that the funds would be credited to the account of the various beneficiaries as soon as possible after work fully resumes on tuesday.
