Sheriff ready for investigation on
Boko Haram.
....
....
A former National Chairman of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ali Modu
Sheriff has offered himself for investigation
over his alleged sponsorship of the Boko Haram
sect.
The Borno State Attorney General and
Commissioner for Justice, Kaka Shehu Lawal,
had, at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)
conference in Port Harcourt on Tuesday,
accused Sheriff of being a major sponsor of the
insurgents.
But Sheriff, in a reaction by his Media Adviser,
Mr. Inuwa Bwala on Thursday, rejected
Lawal’s allegation, demanding a retraction and
apology from the Borno Attorney General.
To prove his innocence, Sheriff has called for
comprehensive investigation aimed at exposing
sponsors of the terror group.
He said, “We challenge the Federal
Government, to as a matter of urgency,
investigate, no matter who is involved, and
expose those whose antecedents show they
have links with Boko Haram.
“The Borno Attorney General is not a security
expert and we have the best security men in
the world, and they are in a good position to
tell us whether someone is directly or indirectly
linked to this Boko Haram.
“By taking it upon himself to inform the world
that this noble man is linked with Boko Haram,
I think it is the greatest disservice to the fight
against insecurity.
“I think they are trying to cover up their own
culpability in the whole matter. The
commissioner is trying to divert attention from
the real culprit of Boko Haram.”
We are ready to negotiate with
Buhari, to end the struggle for
Biafra – Third IPOB breakaway
group
...
...
The latest breakaway group from the Indigenous
People of Biafra, IPOB, the Reformed Indigenous
People of Biafra, RE-IPOB, on Thursday,
expressed readiness to negotiate with the Federal
Government.
This is the third group that broke away from the
frontline group, IPOB.
A splinter group identified as the Rebranded
Indigenous People of Biafra, TRIPOB, had
yesterday, announced its breakaway, saying the
struggle for the actualisation of Biafra was not
feasible, adding that IPOB under it’s imprisoned
leader, Nnamdi Kanu was not flexible.
In a statement by its spokesman, Ikemba Biafra,
the third splinter group said it will only dialogue
if the government was sincere in ending the
protracted agitations for an independent state of
Biafra.
According to RE-IPOB, it will not tolerate any
insincerity from the government.
The statement reads, “If the federal government
is sincere in its dialogue with RE-IPOB, then the
Biafran flag can be exchanged with the Nigerian
flag in the presence of President Muhammadu
Buhari, the National Security Adviser, Director of
State Security and the Elders of Biafra.
“If the dialogue is fruitful; then a peace treaty
and a ‘no victor no vanquished tree’ will be
planted at Gakem where the first shot of the
Nigerian Civil war started and at Amichi Nnewi
where the formal cessation of hostilities of the
war began.”
Nigeria, UK Sign MoU On
Return Of Stolen Assets
...
...
The Federal Government has signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
with the British Government on the
modalities for the return of Nigerian
stolen assets.
The Attorney-General of the Federation
and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar
Malami, signed on behalf of the Federal
Government in Abuja on Tuesday.
Malami said that the MoU reflected the
desire and willingness of both countries
to continue cooperation and mutual
support.
He said that this was in the responsible
and transparent return of all recovered
assets.
The minister outlined the objectives of
the MoU to include the fact that the
processes of returning stolen assets was
a partnership recognising the interest of
both countries and based on mutual
understanding, confidence and trust.
“That both countries recognised that they
have a mutual interest in ensuring that
returned assets are not at risk of being
misappropriated again.
“And that both countries recognised they
have obligations toward their own
citizens for providing such assurances.
“That both countries recognised the
importance of ensuring that the highest
possible standard of transparency and
accountability are applied for the return
of assets,” Malami stated.
He assured the international community
that all funds
recovered would be judiciously utilised
for projects that would benefit the
poorest segment of the Nigerian society.
Earlier, leader of the UK delegation,
British Minister of State for Immigration,
Robert Goodwill, said that the MoU
provided the mechanism by which
monies could be returned.
Goodwill, who is also a member of the
British Parliament, noted that there was
no safe place for stolen assets in the UK.
“Our ability to recover and return stolen
assets should send a clear message to
all who may seek to harbour such assets
that there is no safe haven in the UK,” he
said.
According to him, the British government
was committed to the return of all funds
looted from the Nigerian State.
“We are keen to do this as soon as the
necessary legal process allow.
“As outlined at the summit, we will be
taking steps to accelerate the
procedures for identification and
confiscation of illegally acquired assets,”
Goodwill added.
He said that his country was as
committed as Nigeria in ensuring that
beneficial ownership of assets was made
available to relevant authorities so they
know who the real owners of assets held
in the UK are.
“Forty jurisdictions, including British
Overseas Territories and Crown
Dependencies announced that they will
automatically share beneficial ownership
information relating to companies, trusts,
foundations,
Shell companies and other relevant
entities and legal arrangements.
“It is important that everyone can see
how returned assets are used to benefit
Nigerians. We have therefore agreed in
this MoU to be fully transparent about
this,” he added.
The signing of the MoU is a follow up to
the agreement reached at the London
anti-corruption summit in May.

YOUTHS ATTACK PRIEST.

A tragic incident took place yesterday as Youths of Obubo community in Anambra
State attacked a Priest, Rev. Father Fidelis Ifeanyichukwu Ugozo of the St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Ugbenu, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, beating him to a state of coma.
.
The rampaging youths led by their leader, Gabriel Ikegbunam are said to be Idol
worshipers. According to Anambra Broadcasting Service, (ABS),the priest and some of his followers were carrying out a rosary
procession around some of the villages when they were stopped by one of the youth leaders in the village, Gabriel Ikegbunam, who felt the clergy man and his followers were out to burn down their deity. Mr. Ikegbunem insisted that they will not enter his village, and when they overpowered him, he started making contacts, calling some youths from the village to attack the priest and others who
were mainly women and children.
The Catholic priest who was severely beaten and stabbed in the face was rushed to an undisclosed hospital in Ebenebe after the attack but was later
transferred to St. Joseph’s hospital, Adazi Ani by the Ebenebe Deanery Chaplain. A former catechist at St. Raphael’s parish
Ugbenu, Cletus Nwankwo, said Obubo village is known
for adulterous acts, adding that the youths suspected that the Rosary procession was aimed at destroying their deity shrine.
“They moved from Agueke village to Obiagu and decided to branch at Obubo before Ikegbunam blocked them and in the process, he called some of them and
told them that Catholics are coming to burn their shrine. Soon the youths trooped out, wielding dangerous weapons such as axe, gun and machetes.
.
“They grabbed the Blessed Sacrament from our Parish Priest, hit it on the floor and used the Monstrance to hit our Parish
priest on his hand before stabbing him on the face and other parts of the body” he said.
The Traditional ruler of Ugbenu town, Igwe Lawrence Egwuonu, while speaking to newsmen said his wife, Lolo Egwuonwu
was also beaten by the youths, stating that Gabriel Ikegbunam, Israel Egwu and two
others stormed his palace before the incident occurred to complain that their shrine and other sacred symbols were burnt by Christians.
“After investigation, I discovered that they were all liars. None of their shrines were burnt and I can defend it anywhere. “It was Ikegbunam that incited others to
attack the priest and other Christians. “Their greatest mistake was touching the priest and destroying the Blessed
Sacrament. It is a sacrilege and they will pay for it,” he said.
Two amongst the rampaging youths, Anthony Anigbogu and Humphrey Ekwenye, have been reprimanded and are
currently in the custody of the State CID, Awka, while other accomplices are still at large.www.facebook.com
