SENATOR MAKES APPEAL TO BUHARI.

ECONOMIC RECESSION: SACK FINANCE MINISTER, CBN GOVERNOR, NATIONAL PLANNING MINISTER -Senator Dino Melaye Tells Buhari
.
Deeply worried by the poor state of the economy which has brought unprecedented hardship and hunger on the masses, a federal lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye, APC, Kogi West, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to take urgent and drastic measures, including the immediate sack of three prominent members of his Economic Team as the solution-precedent to reboot the ailing economy.
Melaye, in a statement, in Abuja,Sunday, said the president must shake up his cabinet, and accused most of the members of gross incompetence, inexcusable ineptitude and a distressing lack of capacity to deliver on the mandate of their ministries and agencies.
Those to face the axe immediately if the economy must be effectively rebooted to deliver on the Change Agenda of the present administration,in the estimation of Melaye, include the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, Budget and National Planning Minister, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma and the Governor of the Central bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr Godwin Emefiele. L
In the statement Melaye said:” At the moment, it must be crystal clear to all discerning minds that the president’s widely-acclaimed magical body language has lost its presumed aura and efficacy.
“His no-nonsense demeanour is equally neither instilling fear nor commanding respect and loyalty from amongst his cabinet members. It is therefore obvious that the time for barking is over, now is the time to bite and boot out all those who have demonstrated, in the past several months, a crass lack of capacity to effectively carry out the functions of their office.
“The Finance Minister has not only displayed gross incompetence on the job, she also lacks the basic and rudimentary grasp of economic fundamentals necessary to run a critical sector of the Nigerian economy like the Finance Ministry.
“It is time for her to go now and pave way for a qualified and experienced person to steer the Nigerian economy away from the dark woods it has sunk presently under her stewardship”.
On Udoma Udo Udoma, he stated: “To be sure, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma is a very charismatic man, an accomplished lawyer, and a quintessential gentleman with a fairly untainted reputation.Melaye said, “At the moment, it must be crystal clear to all discerning minds that the President’s widely-acclaimed magical body language has lost its presumed aura and efficacy. His no-nonsense demeanor is equally neither instilling fear nor commanding respect and loyalty from among his cabinet members.
“It is therefore obvious that the time for barking is over; now is the time to bite and boot out all those who have demonstrated, in the past several months, a crass lack of capacity to effectively carry out the functions of their office.”
The All Progressives Congress senator, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, also condemned Buhari’s economic team led by Vice President Yemi Osibanjo, saying that “their decisions will not be and has never been respected by the economic managers and the bureaucracy in Nigeria.”
Melaye urged the President to, instead, constitute an ‘Emergency Ad Hoc Economic Team’ made up of all former ministers of finance, ex-ministers of budget and national planning, ex-CBN governors as well as members drawn from the academia with “deep knowledge of developmental economics to drive the economic revival programme.”
He said, “The President must immediately transit from mere rhetoric to drastic but positive action to save the economy and Nigeria from total collapse. The hunger in the land is real, pervasive, widespread and debilitating for the poor masses.
“As I walk the streets of my constituency these days, I constantly harbour a foreboding that I could be stoned by my angry constituents for the failure of Mr. President to fulfill his campaign promises and expectations to Nigerians.
“Nigeria is tottering on a dangerous precipice, sliding perilously to a certain catastrophe if the current economic malaise is not halted immediately.”

THE PUBLIC LIBRARY AND NATION BUILDING.

The role of the public library to the society is paramount. Besides providing the basic educational foundation for further studies, it acts as moulder of public opinion. This is derived from the premise that what an individual reads determines his perception of things. The public library there is an institution that requires all the attention of the Government for its proper functioning. UNESCO recognises the importance of a public library in Nation building. In its 1972 revised public library manifesto it states inter alia" that the public library offer to adults and children the opportunity to keep with the times,to educate themselves continuously and keep abreast of progress in the science and arts. Its content should be a living demonstration of the evolution of knowledge and culture, constantly reviewed, kept up to date and attractively presented. In this way,it help people form their own opinions and developed their creative and critical capabilities and powers of appreciation."
The public library is concerned with the communication of information and ideas ,whatever form it may be expressed.
Our colonial masters clearly understood the role of public library. During their time, libraries were built and equipped with colonial books. No wonder, in those days, and educated Nigeria know British history but remain ignorant of Nigerian history.
Several years after independence, it appears we are still not aware of the critical role a well built and stocked public library can play in Nation building. In Benue state for example ,the public library seemed to be phased out .Only the library at the headquarters seem to be operating. Other ones in Gungul ,Konshisha local Government has been converted into stores and the stocked books and shelves ,sold off. The library at Gboko too seem not to be working.
The Benue state chapter of Association of Nigerian Authors is championing the cause for a revised reading culture amongst our youths. Where are the books to read? Or do one buy in the market, stay there and read.
Our youths now take to facebook and other platforms because they can be added easily. How workers can afford to buy a newspaper and read now, talkless of a novel that is costly? I could recall how during holidays we could troop to the Gboko library to read. Go there and see dust ,broken windows and empty shelves.
The state government should renovate our public libraries, equip them with current book. This will make the citizens to be more enlightened and to effectively contribute to National development.

WELCOME EMBER MONTHS.

The last four months of the year are called Ember months- that is September, October, November and the almighty December.
The the past ember months were widely celebrated with Christians, the road safety , companies and even individuals lining up their programmes to celebrate the ember months.
How is the ember months this year? From the look of things , it appears Xmas may not even be celebrated. This is attributed to the galloping inflation been experienced in Nigeria. Families are basically tying to survive. Every commodity in the market is out of reach. A bag of rice goes for 17 thousand naira. How much will that cause at Xmas?
People are daily committing suicide because of economic hardships now.
Schools resume nationwide this week, hope of students going back is bleak because of lack of funds.
Only God will help.
